Suzi Uzi
Coach / Co-Founder
"Daytime" Name: Emily Murray
Age: 25
What position do you skate: Mostly jammer, but I play all 3. Wherever I'm needed :)
How long have you been with the league: I am one of the Co-Founders, so I've been part of Red Dirt since the startup in June 2007. But I played flat track derby for a year before starting the banked track team.
What's your favorite position to play: JAMMER!!! And pivot, if I start to get tired. I like pivoting because I like to be in front and not let anyone pass me
What's your signature derby move: dishing out bruises with my razor-blade shoulders. My teammates joke that I "sharpen" them before practice :) And running on my toe-stops
What sports have you played in the past: gymnastics, swimming, track, softball, soccer, and taekwondo. I have 2 gold medals in taekwondo Jr. Nationals' sparring division, maybe that's why I like derby so much :) I'm a pretty competitive person
How did you get involved in derby: I started my derby career playing flat track. I saw a bumper sticker that said "Support Your Local Rollergirls" and went to my first practice the day after I got back from my honeymoon
What derby skill are you working on right now: Maneuvering through a pack with quick feet. And blocking, always working to improve my blocks.
Is there a "routine" that you do before bouts: I drink 2 NOS energy drinks, and take 3 eye-droppers of liquid B12 under my tongue. People used to think I was "juicing" before bouts because I have so much energy, haha. These days I just get really quiet and mellow before a game.
What is your favorite derby clothing item that you own: My black and grey striped bubble skirt, and of course my uniform
What kind of skates/wheels do you have: Reidell R3's (they're OLD, I need a new pair *hint hint*) with SureGrip Interceptor V-Drives (wheels).
What is your favorite alcoholic drink: Wells' Banana Bread Beer
What is your "daytime" job: I wait tables at the Prohibition Room, and I am currently looking for a graphic design job
What is your favorite derby quote: "My Derby Wife could beat up your Soccer Mom"
Tell us more about your "derby" self: I can't remember what life was like before ROLLER DERBY! Pure Chaos is like my big sister. It's really funny because we pick on each other all the time, but we're actually really good friends. And Smackety Anne is one of the biggest "behind the scenes" persons keeping this league together. The 3 of us have been through a lot together in roller derby. I absolutely love this sport, and all the girls on my league. We have managed to create some pretty awesome friendships, and I can't wait to start performing bouts with these bad-ass ladies!
